Isla Cristina

Isla Cristina is situated on the western coast of the province of Huelva and in the southwest of the Andalusian region, a privileged position in the Coast of the Light.
Its origins are very recent, with its beginnings in the second half of the eighteenth century, when Mediterranean fishermen established themselves here to exploit the fishing grounds of sardines and tuna, salt the fish and extract salt.

Following the earthquake of Lisbon in 1755, it became a definitive and stable settlement, under the name of Real Isla de la Higuerita. Around 1834 this was modified to its current name, Isla Cristina, in acknowledgement to Queen Maria Cristina for her humanitarian aid during cholera.
Currently the Isla Cristina´s port is the most important in Andalusia and one of the most important at national level, both for its fleet as for its daily catches of fresh fish and shellfish.
